-1 101 Z Traditionally founded in the year 753 BC by Romulus, by the time of the Roman Empire Rome had grown into a vast city over 2 miles (3.5 km) across. Originally constructed in brick and timber, Rome under Augustus became a city of splendid stone public buildings and towering blocks of flats (insulae). Replaced as political capital by Constantinople in the 4th century AD, it remained the centre of the western, Catholic, church throughout all its vicissitudes at the hands of invading barbarians.
